League III batted .800 in the first night of the first round of the best-of-five South Carolina American Legion baseball Lower State playoff series.
In addition to Kershaw County Post 17’s 11-2 victory over Horry County, League III champion Sumter disposed of Lake City, 12-1, in a game stopped in the seventh inning by the 10-run rule. Hartsville, the third-place finisher in League III, returned home from Monday’s game at Murrell’s Inlet with a 9-2 victory.
The lone setback suffered by a team from the six-squad circuit was fifth-place Dalzell-Shaw which was upended by League II champion Florence, 18-2, in a game stopped in the seventh by the 10-run rule.
Manning-Santee, which finished fourth in League III, has already won its series as League I runner-up Beaufort forfeited due to its inability to field enough players.
In the other Lower State series opener, League II champion Goose Creek outlasted Georgetown, the fourth-place finisher from Region II, 11-9. The winner of the Goose Creek vs. Georgetown series will face the survivor of the Kershaw County vs. Horry County series in round two of the playoffs.
