Gabrielle Goodwin, 7, daughter of Camden native Rozalyn Goodwin, sports new barrettes she invented that will be sold by Walgreens after July 25.

Gabrielle Goodwin, 7, and her mother, Rozalynn, invented something that will actually be available for people to buy at a local store soon. Gabrielle, whose father, Michael, is a Camden native, and her mother invented what they consider the solution for securing the ends of girls’ pigtails, braids and twists. It’s called the Double-Face Double-Snap Barrette by GaBBY and, according to a press release, is considered the first of its kind.

Twenty-nine Walgreens stores in South Carolina and Georgia will begin carrying the “GaBBY Bows” after July 25.

After her mother asked her to come up with ways to give back to the community, Gabrielle decided she wanted to “play with all the girls others won’t play with” -- any girls who have been bullied.

As part of her way of celebrating GaBBY Bows’ debut, Gabrielle is inviting families to bring their girls to a “Play Date with GaBBY” on Friday, Aug. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Columbia Northwest Family YMCA in Irmo. Admission is free and families are encouraged to bring items from a wish list created for Palmetto Place Children’s Center. There will be bullying prevention games and activities and barrettes will be given away.

In addition, the Walgreens on Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo will host a special meet and greet with GaBBY on July 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. Midlands families can come learn more about the new barrettes through demonstrations and get a chance to win free barrettes.

(The online version of this article has been edited to correctly identify Gabrielle's father, Michael Goodwin, as a native of Camden, not her mother, Rozalyn. The C-I regrets the error.)
