Bethune hires police chief

The town of Bethune has hired a new police chief after being without one since the resignation of Officer Glenn Davis in April. Mayor Charles McCoy reported at that time that Davis had submitted a resignation letter Thursday, April 10 saying the following day would be his last as a town employee.

Bethune Town Council will introduce new Police Chief Joey Cobb at its monthly meeting Thursday night.

McCoy said the town advertised the position and received several responses, but that the town budget provided only enough funding for a part-time officer. He said that made the position not especially attractive to someone who needs a full-time job. McCoy said Cobb, of Camden, has now been hired after interviews were conducted with several applicants. He said Cobb is retired from the S.C. Highway Patrol and has also worked for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

Thursday’s meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Bethune Recreation Center.

Other agenda items include an update on the town’s water tower and water system from Councilman Don Witham and an update on the efforts to clean up unsightly properties in town by Councilman John Fulmer. McCoy will also speak on park issues in Bethune and on a proposed leash law. Councilman John Heflin is also slated to make a report on the town’s Planning and Zoning Committee.
