Harry J. Koutroulakis, DMD, MAGD, of Lugoff, recently received the Academy of General Dentistry’s (AGD) Mastership Award. He received the award during the AGD’s annual meeting June 26-29 in Detroit, Mich.

The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Koutroulakis first had to become an AGD “Fellow,” involving a written exam, and also completed 1,100 hours of continuing dental education.

Much of the continuing education had to be “hands on,” performing specific types of treatment while under supervision of AGD qualified educators.

“This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” AGD President W. Carter Brown, DMD, FAGD, said. “Dr. Koutroulakis should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.”

Dr. Koutroulakis graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1986 and currently practices dentistry in Lugoff. He and his wife, Margaret, have three children, Daniel, Andrew and Helen. His father, Dr. Sam Koutroulakis, is also a retired dentist in Beaufort.

As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Koutroulakis joins more than 2,300 active national AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patients’ oral health. The AGD is a professional association of 38,000 general dentists dedicated to providing quality dental care and oral health education to the public. AGD members stay up-to-date in their profession through a commitment to continuing education. Founded in 1952, the AGD is the second largest dental association in the United States, and it is the only association that exclusively serves the needs and represents the interests of general dentists.
