The Dabney family which, historically, has a wide connection in the Camden and Kershaw areas, held its annual reunion on June 28 at the Lancaster Golf Club’s Fairway Room in Lancaster. More than 225 family members from as far away as California, New Jersey, Missouri and Virginia gathered to meet their relatives from five branches of the Dabney family.

The reunion coincided with the release of the new book, The Dabneys of South Carolina: A Family History in Stories and Pictures. The authors are John Edward Dabney, a native of Rock Hill, who presently resides in New Jersey; and his cousin, Joseph Earl Dabney, a native of Kershaw, who lives in Atlanta. Joseph is also an award-winning author and writer of several books. Both authors were on hand to talk about the Dabney family history as well as to sign books for family members.

“The book is unlike any other genealogy book you have ever read,” John Dabney said.

In addition to ancestral photo galleries, many of the chapters are written in storybook form, chronicling the Civil War Dabneys, as well as life in the early South Carolina mill villages, including vivid recollections and stories of ancestors beginning in the 1800’s. A key section of the new book presents the family tree and includes each branch of the family through the generations, beginning in 1795 with the birth of Alexander Dabney in Ireland.
