New kid on the block

Hey, y’all! I am Jim McGowan. I am the most recent addition to the award-winning staff of the Chronicle-Independent. I can only hope to live up to their high standards. It will not be easy. I will be the Localife editor and cover the education beat.

Despite my youthful looks, I have been in the newspaper and publishing business since my graduation from Auburn in 1976. I have been a newspaper editor in Alabama, Georgia and here in South Carolina. In the words of some ink-stained member of the fourth estate that proceeded me, “Journalism is the most fun way to starve to death.”

I have been very lucky in my long career. I have been fortunate enough to win awards for sports photography, insert cover design, general layout and two awards from the South Carolina Press Association for Best Humor Column in 2009 and 2011.

I have only recently arrived here in Camden. The move was precipitated by one of my sons marrying a local lady, the lovely Jennifer Campbell, and moving here. So, now I am close to some of my nine grandkids.  I have two more grands in Missouri and another pair in Virginia. You can bet that the Toys ’R’ Us folks love to see me coming.

I guess that the biggest joy I have in life is those kids. I am very much into being “GPJ.” That is what they call me. It stands for, “Grand Pa Jim.” My Senior Granddaughter In Charge (SGIC), Mary Katherine, came up with that moniker and it stuck.

I do the usual grandfather things. I coach baseball, go to all the events in which they compete, go to the concerts where they play, take them fishing, all the fun stuff. I do my very best to spoil them rotten and then dump them back in their parents arms. Payback for all the grief my four kids gave me through the years.

For my own amusement I occasionally play at golf. No one would ever accuse me of being a golfer. As in the old saying, “There are carpenters and guys who own hammers. There are plumbers and guys who own wrenches.” For me I am one of the guys who own golf clubs.

I live with two roommates, Fast Eddie and Lazy Jake, who are brothers. Their last name is Kilkenny They are two All-American Alley Minks that my SGIC adopted and gave them to me because she thought I might be lonely in the new place. So I live in an all-male, Irish household.

If you ever want to contact me call me at 432-6157. I will be happy to just chat, or get a news tip or if you want to register a complaint feel free to call.
