KELLI MURPHY UNLEASHES a smile and a fist pump after retrieving her ball from the cup following her hole in one at The Members Club at Woodcreek.

Before leaving to continue her academic and golf pursuits at Auburn University next week, Kelli Murphy had some unfinished business closer to home.
Murphy, a 2014 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School and a six-time letterwinner for the Demons’ boys’ golf team, finished tied for seventh in the 84th Women’s Trans National Amateur Championship played over course at The Members Club at Woodcreek in Elgin on July 29 through Aug. 1.
During the course of play in one of the top three events in women’s golf, Murphy fired a hole-in-one at the 15th hole --- the island green --- at Woodcreek last Thursday. The hole was playing at 160 yards as Murphy needed one swing of her 5-iron to ace the hole. Ironically, one week earlier in a practice round, she scored her first hole-in-one on the same hole.
Murphy, the most decorated golfer in Lugoff-Elgin history and the junior medalist in this event two years ago, was tied for fourth place after the first three rounds of the event with a 73-73-71 -- 217. Playing in monsoon conditions last Friday, Murphy scored a 78, for a final 7-over par 295 which was 11 shots off the winning pace of Kim August who carded a 284 for her four rounds over the 6,359-yard, par 72-layout.
Prior to playing in Trans National, the Elgin resident competed as part of the winning Carolinas team in the 13th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge played over The Clubs at Olde Mill course in Laurel Fork, Va., on July 26-27.
The Carolinas squad breezed past their Virginia counterparts, winning 9.5-2.5 to take home the championship trophy.
In Saturday’s first round of singles play, Murphy romped to a 9 and 7 win over Amy Yang. One day later, Murphy teamed with Reona Hirai for a 6 and 5 victory over the Virginias pairing of Meagan Board and Amy Yang in four-ball action.
