A funeral service to celebrate the life of William Hydrick Sanders, Major US Air Force (Ret.) 85, of Hartsville, SC, was  held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Kelleytown Baptist Church in Hartsville, SC. Rev. Rod Elliott and Rev. Lin Kirkman officiated. Burial will followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Camden, with military rites. The family received friends from 2:00-4:00 PM, Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Brown Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville.

Major Sanders, widower of Mary Emerson Sanders, died Thursday, August 14, 2014. He was born in Gastonia, NC, the son of the late Weston Hydrick and Mary Elizabeth Camp Sanders. Major Sanders was a retired Air Force officer, school teacher and assistant principal. He graduated from the University of Maryland where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He received his master’s degree from Chapman University in Orange, CA. Major Sanders also completed graduate studies at the University of Arizona. He was a reserve police officer in Hartsville and was an avid runner. Major Sanders was a member of the YMCA, president of the Board of Officers of Prestwood Country Club and director of Friends of the Library. He was a  member of the Moose Lodge, a Mason who was a member of Hartsville Lodge 173, a member of the Florence York Rite and a member of the Omar Shrine Temple. Major Sanders was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.

Major Sanders is survived by his daughters, Dawn Partin (Roddy) of Camden, Melonie Turbeville (Russell) of Indian Land, SC; sons, Weston Sanders of Camden and Daniel Sanders (Kim) of Austin, TX; 11 grandchildren; brother, Timothy Forest Sanders (Charlotte); and special friend, Peggy Tucker.

Besides his wife and parents, Major Sanders was predeceased by his son, William Hydrick Sanders, Jr.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.
