I am writing about the negative article that appeared in the Camden Chronicle this past Friday concerning the Lugoff Elgin cheerleaders.

I am the mother of one of those girls and I am not happy about the comments made to the community. These girls wear cheerleading uniforms that happen to be standard at every single school across the country. Not only are these girls above average students, they must keep up with demanding curriculums and a practice schedule that keeps them in practice most afternoons as well as cheering and working at athletics events. I am very proud of my daughter and all of these girls for working hard to perfect what they do.

Cheerleading has changed over the years to include tumbling skills that takes hours and hours of practice to perfect, not to mention the risk that they take in performing some of these skills. It’s hard for me to believe that another human, another mother, could speak so ill of a group of innocent young ladies.

I have had the pleasure of being around this group of exceptional athletes many times and think they represent Lugoff-Elgin High School in a very positive way. I was sitting in the Chick-Fil-A parking lot, waiting on my daughter to finish, on the very day these girls were there. They were there on a volunteer basis collecting money for charity, for the United Way. I saw nothing that they did that made them look as if they were prostitutes waiting on a john to pick them up. They were simply giving of their time in an attempt to do something for the community that they live in.

They were not thanked, they were publically embarrassed by this individual and I am demanding a public apology!!! This should have never happened to these girls!!!
