The Kershaw County Amateur Radio club will have a series of classes about amateur radio open to licensed and unlicensed enthusiasts. The classes will run September 10, 17 and 24 Wednesday evenings at 7-9 p.m. in the Band Room on the Camden Military Academy grounds.

Classes will be designed to inform and reinforce amateur radio practices and protocols, as well as create a more technically proficient and confident operator.

Recently, the club held classes on the construction and use of hand-held satellite antennas. A satellite was due to fly over on the final day of the build. The proper frequencies were programmed into 5 watt hand-held transceivers and the student built antennas were attached; during the satellites’ pass, contact was made and confirmation was received by a club member. While the radios cost less than $60 and the antenna is about $10, the experience gained is unmeasurable. The ability to talk to a satellite and have it return a response is thrilling. Remember folks are sending messages out into space hoping for a response routinely, when one comes back it brings satisfaction that you have been heard and understood. This "homebrew" technology goes to root of the hobby and exemplifies the abilities embraced by many amateurs.

The Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club is blessed to have many members that cherish the title of "Elmer", a name given to those who give, unselfishly, to new operators their time and experiences. This ultimately hones the skills of all hams and betters the hobby. As the club evolves it is practicing and preparing for service to the community in the event of a disaster or when called on by our civic leaders. Plan to attend these classes if you desire to be a better operator. The club will be scheduling a Technician level class in the near future, information will be available at
