The Camden Garden Club will hold its first meeting of the new year on Sept. 8 at the home of Kate Denton.

The club officers have been very busy over the summer getting things ready and organized. Monthly programs were planned, places for the meetings set up, projects and committees formed, and the judges and hostesses were all coordinated.

The yearbook came out earlier this month and, as usual, the cover was exquisite. Member Cathy Clarke designed it and used a beautiful lilac colored hydrangea for the front. The back of the yearbook is covered with a picture of lush green ferns. On the inside is a letter from President Mary Foster Cox and every couple of pages there are various quotes and inspirational messages.

The monthly programs are included along with helpful gardening tips, hints, and planning.

The program this month sounds absolutely fascinating! Josh Arrants will be the speaker. Arrants is a natural resources specialist with the Wildlife Branch at Fort Jackson as well as an instructor for the S.C. Wildlife Federation’s Palmetto Pro Birder and Midlands Naturalist programs.

Along with great programs like this one, the club gives lots of hands on workshops that encourage members to try new things and experiment with different forms, textures, and materials.

Every month, members are asked to bring in specimens and arrangements to be judged for year-end awards. Last year,
Marilyn Kohn received the award for design/arrangements and Jill Bettendorf earned both the Horticulture and Helen Phelps Bowl Awards. The president’s award was given to Joy Scully.

The judges for this month will be Alex Thaxton, chairman, Marilyn Kohn, and Jill Bettendorf.

The suggested theme is “In Tune with Nature” and they are encouraged to use flowers in various stages of development, from bud to bloom.

After a brief meeting, the program and the judge’s report, members will gather and socialize while enjoying the lake views and sampling  an assortment of goodies provided by hostess chairman Amy Cantey, along with help from Liz Beard, and Joy Scully. For more information, call Amy Canety.
