L-E girls gets second region win over RNE

Using a 22-point second quarter to break open what was a low-scoring first eight minutes, the Lugoff-Elgin girls basketball team snapped a 10-game skid with a 42-39 victory over host Richland Northeast on Tuesday in Columbia.

The win gave Von Duncan’s troops a sweep of the Lady Cavaliers as the visiting Lady Demons improved to 2-6 in Region 4-4A play.

L-E led, 7-5, after one quarter and used a 22-8 point second quarter run to carry a 29-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. RNE limited the Lady Demons to one basket in the third stanza to close the gap to 31-21, but would not get any closer.

Aneka Dixon led the Lady Demons with 13 points. Caressa Samuel was next with 10 points while Dahiana Rodriguez added nine. Kirsten Baker pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds to go along with three points.

Demons tripped up by Cavs:

Darius Custard led the way for Derek Belton’s charges with 18 points while fellow seniors Zach Salmond and Jojo Pellegrino were next with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

North Central splits with Great Falls:

One night earlier, the Lady Knights defeated Lewisville with the boys dropping their game against the Lions.

Tonight’s games:

Both Camden and McBee will be on the road traveling to meet Hartsville and McBee, respectively, while the Camden Military Academy entertains rival Prince Avenue Prep. The starting time for all four of tonight’s games is 6 p.m.

Lugoff-Elgin will be at home tonight to take on Dutch Fork. The Lady Silver Foxes feature 6-foot-5 center Alaina Coates, one of the nation’s top-rated sophomore basketball players.
The North Central girls improved to 3-2 in Region 3-A play, good for second in conference action, with a win over host Great Falls on Tuesday. The NC boys lost to the Red Devils in the nightcap to fall to 0-5 in league action.
Host Richland Northeast handed Lugoff-Elgin its eighth loss in as many Region 4-4A starts with a 61-49 win over the Demons Tuesday.
