Members of Sanders Stoney American Legion Auxiliary Unit 203 and James Leroy Belk American Legion Post 17 unite for the Legion’s 96th National Conference in July, held in Charlotte, N.C.

Teresia Hayes of Camden, Sanders Stoney Unit 203, was one of nearly 2,000 delegates, alternates and distinguished guests from across the country who attended the 94th American Legion Auxiliary National Convention August 22-28 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hayes is eligible for membership in the Auxiliary through her father, John Lewis Seward, who served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam Era and is a Purple Heart Recipient.

Hayes participated in a variety of activities throughout the week along with Auxiliary members, Past Department President, Catherine Gail Gibbs and State Department of South Carolina Auxiliary Emergency Fund Chairman, Pearl Sanders Mills.

They attended National Executive Committee meetings, divisional caucuses, the nomination of state and national officers and recognition of the year’s achievements. They were able to listen to President Obama and Montel Williams as they addressed the members.

American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves for nearly a century to meeting the needs of our nation’s veterans, military and their families both here and abroad.

They volunteer millions of hours yearly, with a value of nearly $2 billion. Auxiliary volunteers across the country also step up to honor veterans and military through annual scholarships and with Palmetto Girls State programs, teaching high school juniors to be leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism.

To learn more about the Auxiliary’s mission or to volunteer, donate or join, contact Teresia Hayes, State Department of South Carolina Senior Vice President and Membership Chairman at (803) 600-9273 or hayes.teresia@gmail.com.
