I am writing this letter about the concerns of the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter. Our animal shelter has its pros and cons. The benefits of an animal shelter is it provides protection for those individuals that cannot afford the proper care for their animal. Think about it: what would our city look like if we did not have an animal shelter? There would be dogs and cats running around freely. Every day I ride down Hwy. 1, I see a helpless dog on the side of the rode with its ribs sticking out from lack of nutrients.

The biggest thing that concerns me is animal abuse. Why abuse an innocent animal? The shelters provide a safe place for them to stay. In 2012, they have reported about 18 animal abuse cases in our home state, South Carolina. Those include neglect and abandonment, fighting, hoarding and theft. Approximately, 7.6 million animals enter the shelters nationwide every year. Personally, I think the animals at the shelter have great personalities that can become a lifelong best friend that puts kindness in your heart from adopting it.

On the other hand, from all the animal shelters I have been to, I think our local shelter is less fortunate than others. Our town needs to have fundraisers or donations to help provide the correct supplies for our little furry friends. Our community needs to supply blankets to keep them warm, food for cats and dogs to stay healthy, detergent to keep the blankets and other things clean, treats to reward and train, and toys to keep them entertained. We need to take some time out of our lives to keep this animal shelter running. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read my letter about my concerns. Please take the initiative to help these pitiful animals.
