An orientation meeting for potential participants in the James Leroy Belk American Legion Post 17 Annual High School Oratorical Contest will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30 at Post 17’s home on West DeKalb St. in Camden. Contest officials will discuss the subject that will be used for oration as well as explain contest rules.

Any student in 9th-12th grade-- whether enrolled in public, private or home school in Kershaw County-- is eligible.

The local winner from Post 17-- who will participate at the quadrant contest on Feb. 14, 2015-- will be awarded a $500 scholarship. Scholarships of $250 and $125 will be awarded to second and third place winners. Local students who continued to win and represented S.C.  in the national contest in 2006 and 2008 received a total of more than $8,000 each in scholarships.

Post 17 will conduct an oration contest practice at 2 p.m. Jan. 4 in the legion hall. This gives participants an opportunity to rehearse their prepared oration in a simulated contest environment. Parents and guests may attend. Participation in this rehearsal is mandatory for participation in the local contest.

The local contest will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the legion hall. Parents and guests are allowed to attend. The time and location of the contest will be announced at a later date.

The state contest will be held Mar. 7, 2015.  The state winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship with the guarantee of an additional $1,500 for competing in the first round of the national contest. All state winners are provided travel and lodging for the national contest in Indianapolis, Ind.

Those interested in competing should contact school guidance counselors or Post 17’s contest Chairman, Richard Lackey, at 432-9527 or rtlackey@truvista.net for more information.
