The Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department and First Palmetto Bank recently sponsored their annual Christmas Card Contest.  The contest is designed to give elementary school students in Kershaw County the opportunity to show off their creativity and artistic skills by sending a Christmas card.  It also gives students the chance to win cash prizes from First Palmetto.

The students were asked to design an original card with an original verse on a piece of plain white or construction paper.  First, second and third place winners were selected for each grade level (kindergarten through 5th grade).  First place winners received $25 prizes; second place winners received $15 prizes; and third place winners received $10 prizes -- all supplied by First Palmetto.

Again this year, an overall winner was awarded from all the first place winners.  The card selected will be used as the county’s Christmas card to be sent out.

This year’s kindergarten winners are Vanessa Perez of Lugoff Elem., 1st place; Emily Denton of Mt. Pisgah Elem., 2nd place; and Amari Gaines of Jackson Elem., 3rd place. First grade winners are Caedie Johnson of Doby’s Mill Elem., 1st place; Gavin Payne of Mt. Pisgah Elem., 2nd place; and Peyton Sims of Mt. Pisgah Elem., 3rd place. Second grade winners are Elizabeth Price of Doby’s Mill Elem., 1st place; Alyssa Faulkenberry of Mt. Pisgah Elem., 2nd place; and Alyssa Lane of Doby’s Mill Elem., 3rd place. Third grade winners are William Carter of Midway Elem., 1st place; Halla Danzy of Mt. Pisgah Elem., 2nd place; and Abby Tutt of Lugoff Elem., 3rd place. Fourth grade winners are Nataleigh Yarborough of Blaney Elem., 1st place; Leah Sweatt of Lugoff Elem., 2nd place; and Abby Knafelc of Lugoff Elem., 3rd place. Fifth grade winners include Devante Davis of Jackson Elem., 1st place; Savannah Crane of Midway Elem., 2nd place; and Alex Matthews of Lugoff Elem., 3rd place.

Amy Peebles of the recreation department extended thanks to all students who participated in this year’s contest.  According to Peebles, nine out of the 11 elementary schools in the county participated in the contest. She also said that the winning cards will be on display at First Palmetto Bank until Dec. 29.

Ryan Team, an employee at First Palmetto, was on hand to award the winners their prizes.  The first place winners were asked to attend the county council meeting following the presentation at the bank to be recognized.  The overall winner was announced and presented a framed picture of the winning Christmas card.  The overall winner was William Carter, a third grader from Midway Elementary.
