Four champs help L-E take third at Gator Invitational

ANDREW MILLS SCORED A win over South Pointe in his 145-pound match last Wednesday before taking the 145-pound title for Lugoff-Elgin in the Gator Invitational at River Bluff last weekend.

Lugoff-Elgin capped an eventful week of wrestling by taking third place in last weekend’s six-team Gator Invitational held at River Bluff High School.

After opening the week with wins over Chester and Northwestern on Tuesday, the Demons fell to visiting South Pointe and Fort Dorchester on Wednesday.

L-E opened the tri-match at the Demons Den with a 42-36 loss to South Pointe, which won the 23rd annual Mid-Carolina Credit Union Holiday Classic at L-E on Dec. 12-13. The Stallions are currently ranked second in the latest 4A wrestling poll conducted by

Jason Grant put the hosts on top, 6-0, with a pin in the 160-pound opener before the Stallions posted consecutive pins to go on top, 12-6. Peter Hemingway’s charges then won two straight pairings with Nick Payne and Seth Branham winning by pin at 195 and 220 pounds, respectively, to give L-E the 18-12 lead which went by the boards with a SP pin at heavyweight which evened the match.

L-E’s Devin Wilson won his 106-pound pairing by forfeit to give his team a 24-18 advantage. The two sides then traded pins with Donneal Johnson putting the hosts on top, 30-24, with a pin at 120 pounds. The Stallions won four of the final five matches with the lone Demon victory coming via pin from Andrew Mills at 145 pounds.

L-E then fell to Fort Dorchester, the sixth ranked team in 4A, 47-23.

The Patriots jumped to a quick 22-0 lead after the first four matches before the Demons broke through with Wilson winning by pin at 106. That was followed by Bryan Robinson winning by pin at 113 before Johnson won via forfeit at 120 to close the gap to 22-18. L-E’s final victory came from Taylor Catoe winning by pin at 132 pounds.

Over the weekend, L-E finished with 128 points at the Gator Invitational which was won by Lexington, the eighth-ranked team in 4A, with 180.5 points. Chapin, which is ranked third in class AAA, was second with 161 points. Columbia (83), Nation Ford (73) and host River Bluff (60) rounded out the field of entries.

The Demons had a quartet of wrestlers battle their way to championships with perfect tournaments. Robinson won at 113 pounds while teammates Noah North, Mills and Grant captured the 138, 145 and 160 pound crowns.

L-E had a pair of runner-ups in Jacob Power (126) and Catoe (132) while Payne was third at 182 pounds with Wilson fourth at 106 pounds.
