Owens: Starting the year right

Traveling more and seeing more places than I have seen -- throughout the United States and other countries -- is something I declared I would do when I chose my New Year’s Resolution.

My first destination of the year will be to Myrtle Beach the third weekend of this month. No, Myrtle Beach is not a place I have never seen or spent time in; however, it is one of my favorite getaway places in South Carolina, especially in the offseason when it is not jam-packed with tourists.

Although Myrtle Beach is only about an hour and 20 minutes from where I live, I have been holding off on traveling there for the sake of saving money. I have been tight with my money. I have been saving for a good reason, but I figure it won’t hurt me at all or my savings too much to splurge a little on a refreshing vacation that will rejuvenate my mind and spirit.

I plan to do what I usually do when I visit, which includes walking on the sand just feet away from the water’s edge; eating at my favorite restaurants, shopping and leaving my hotel and walking along North Ocean Boulevard.

The first day will mainly be hanging around the shore and strolling down South Ocean Boulevard, and dinner at Señor Frogs and more hanging out at Broadway at the Beach. The next day will consist of some shopping and then a pig-out session on crab legs and other seafood at Calabash.

Myrtle Beach is just the start of what I am hoping is a year full of travels to places new and familiar to me.
