The Camden High School (CHS) Gospel Choir will present its debut concert Saturday at 6 p.m. in the CHS auditorium, 1022 Ehrenclou Drive, Camden.

Two of this year’s Junior Leadership Kershaw County students, Marquis Engram and Audria Brooks, founded the choir. Instead of cash, admission to the concert is two cans of food to be donated to Food for the Soul.

“Every November, we take Junior Leadership to Food for the Soul for lunch and for them to tour the facility and put faces to the issues challenging the hungry and homeless in our city and county,” Camden City Councilwoman Laurie Parks, who is also chair of Junior Leadership, said. “In the middle of lunch, Marquis said, ‘Mrs. Laurie, I want to help and I know how. The new gospel choir is going to have its first performance in January and I want to collect for Food for the Soul.”

Parks said she immediately spoke with the facility’s director, Fred Ogburn, and came up with a plan.

The 40-member choir is directed by Kimberly Haddon.
