Demons' run of region titles comes to an end

For the first time since the 1996-97 season, Lugoff-Elgin will enter the state wrestling tournament not as a region champion.

The Demons’ run of dominance came to an end Saturday in a 36-31 loss to Westwood in the Region 4-4A title pairing. L-E finished second and will be on the road for Saturday’s 4A Upper State tournament opener (see below).

The Demons opened Saturday’s 4-4A team championship at Spring Valley with a 57-19 victory over Ridge View with the wins coming from, in order, Devin Wilson (forfeit, 106 pounds), Tyler Carron (major decision, 113), Jacob Carron (forfeit, 120), Lorenzo McGee (forfeit, 126), Taylor Catoe (pin, 132), Jared Jay (forfeit, 138), Evan McDonald (pin, 145), Quinton Robinson (forfeit, 170), Alex Register (decision, 182), Seth Branham (forfeit, 195), Raquiez Dubose (pin, 285)

After Blythewood left the building and forfeited to L-E, Hemingway’s troops edged Dutch Fork, 34-30. The Demons led, 34-18 with two matches to be wrestled after Alex Register won by decision at 182 pounds.

The Demons jumped to a 4-0 lead when Dubose won by a major decision at 285 pounds. Wilson won by decision at 113 to kick off four wins in a row with McGee winning by major decision at 120 and Jacob Caron scoring a pin at 126 before Taylor Catoe won by technical fall at 132. The Demons went over the top when Robinson’s win by decision at 170 was followed by Register’s clincher.

Next up was a 41-31 victory over tourney host Spring Valley. After forfeiting at 220 pounds to open the contest, L-E receive pins from Dubose and Wilson and Tyler Carron’s technical fall win at 113. Jacob Carron won via decision at 126 before Catoe and Noah North won by pin at 132 and 138, respectively. L-E received a pin from Grant at 160 before Register won a decision at 182.

The finale of the day saw Westwood getting a pin in the final match to overtake the Demons, 36-31.

Branham gave L-E a 3-0 lead with a decision at 195. Trailing, 15-3, Wilson won a three-point decision at 113 before WHS scored consecutive pins at 120 and 126 to go on top, 27-3. L-E rallied with Catoe winning by pin at 132 which was followed by a North major decision victory at 138 and senior Andrew Mills winning by pin at 145. Grant Wells was winner by decision at 152 before Robinson’s pin at 170 gave the Demons a 31-30 advantage heading into the final match which was won by the Redhawks.


Demons head to Rock Hill for 4A opening round matches:

By virtue of their second-place finish in the conference, Peter Hemingway’s Demons will meet T. L. Hanna, the third-place finisher from Region 1, in Saturday’s first round 4A state playoff match to be held at Rock Hill High School. The starting time for the first round match is set for 10 a.m. The host Bearcats will take on Riverside, the fourth-place finisher from Region 2 with the winners of the two opening round pairings wrestling in the second round match on Saturday 30 minutes following the completion of the opening round pairings.
