Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) investigators arrested an elderly Lancaster man Thursday, charging him with sexually assaulting a distantly-related 10-year-old girl.

A KCSO press release identified the man as Donald Ray Roberts, 74. According to the press release, the girl’s mother called the KCSO and said Roberts had been inappropriately touching the girl and showing her pornographic images. A follow up investigation resulted in Roberts’ arrest for third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Robert left jail on a $40,000 bond and has yet to be tried for that incident.

In January, the child -- who had moved away from the vicinity where Roberts lived -- confided in her parents again. This time, however, she reportedly detailed two incidents during which Roberts had sexual relations with her. One incident allegedly took place in Kershaw County, the other in Lancaster County. A KCSO investigator who specialized in criminal sexual assault cases against children began another investigation in to Roberts. The child also underwent physical and forensic examinations.

After completing the inquiry, the investigator obtained an arrest warrant for Roberts. He is now charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 11 years of age. The KCSO notified Lancaster County authorities about the incident which allegedly took place in their jurisdiction, and additional charges are pending in that case.

Roberts turned himself in to the KCSO investigator on Thursday at the Kershaw County Detention Center. Due to the nature of the case, Roberts’ bond hearing will be held before a circuit court judge during the week of Feb. 16.

According to the KCSO, Roberts has been previously arrested for receiving stolen goods, lewd act upon a minor, communication of obscene messages and unlawful use of a telephone.

“(This is) another case of a sick, disgusting human being preying on a child,” Sheriff Jim Matthews said. “This little girl will have to live with this for the rest of her life. Since there is no record of a pedophile ever being rehabilitated, it seems fitting that Roberts spend the rest of his life in prison where he will never be able to molest a child again.”
