Recently, a rather important occasion went unnoticed in Camden. Bob Sheheen retired after 38 years on the board of the Carolina Cup Racing Association. In many of these years, he served as vice chairman.

Bob was the person with his hand on the tiller and guided the committee through many important changes after the death of Marion duPont Scott, the owner of Springdale Race Course and chairman of the association. Bob engineered the change of ownership from Mrs. Scott to the state of South Carolina, with the Carolina Cup Racing Association becoming in full control of the property. He wrote all new by-laws for the association.

Through the years, in his gracious way, he has kept many members of the association (including yours truly) from suggesting poor ideas. When the concept for the National Steeplechase Museum came along, Bob supported it all the way, wrote all the by-laws and made the lead gift for the new wing which was completed in 2013.

What a fine and talented gentleman is Bob Sheheen. He will be greatly missed as a member of the Carolina Cup Racing Association. I hope that, now, he can sit back and enjoy his Duke basketball!
