MINIMAMBO CRUISED HOME to a 3 3/4-length victory in breaking her maiden at first asking Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.

Officially, Minimambo carried jockey Rosemary Homeister and 120 pounds on her back in Saturday’s fifth race, a $16,500 maiden claimer run at Tampa Bay Downs.

In reality, the 3-year-old first-time starter was saddled with the hopes and dreams of 32 owners -- all women and mostly all from Camden -- who make up Fast Women LLC, when she was led into the starting gate.

All the Kitalpha filly would do was to rebound from running in sixth place in the field of nine at the quarter pole of the one-mile run over the turf course to breeze home to a 3 ¾-length victory for trainer Maria Bowersock. The final time was 1:26.13 over a track surface listed as firm.

Bumped at the start, the graduate of Donna Freyer’s Custom Care Equine in Camden, rebounded to move up to fourth at the half-mile marker and then, trail race-leading Gansett by a head with a quarter mile to go before Homeister swung Minimambo three wide to take a two-length lead at the top of the stretch.

Once clear, Minimambo drew away for the 3 ¾-length win which paid $13.80, $7.20 and $4.40 to her backers.

Minimambo was purchased at the 2013 Keeneland fall yearling sales for Fast Women LLC by Freyer and Fast Women investor Helen Richards and was then shipped to Freyer’s barn on Carter Street to begin her training.

The idea to purchase a filly which would be owned entirely by women, have a female trainer and a female rider was hatched by Freyer and a steering committee. The plan came to fruition in 2013 after having solicited potential owners to be a part of the newly formed syndicate which has one horse and after Saturday, one winner.
