Someone managed to steal an entire automatic teller machine (ATM) from a credit union branch in Lugoff despite a Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputy’s rapid response to an alarm.

According to a KCSO press release, the alarm call came in around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday from Mid Carolina Credit Union. The responding deputy arrived within two minutes of the call, but found the entire ATM had been removed its concrete base and was gone.

The deputy also found a large piece of machinery that had apparently been used to lift the ATM and load it into a vehicle. Investigators arrived a short time later and determined the machine used to remove the ATM had recently been reported stolen from a Kershaw County business.

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said Tuesday afternoon he had learned similar thefts have occurred in several other South Carolina counties and even as far away as Florida, where thieves use the same M.O., or modus operandi, to steal ATMs..

“This has been happening in other places with the same M.O., so it looks like a gang of thieves who go around doing this,” Matthews said. “We’re working with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and other law enforcement agencies on this.”

KCSO investigators are pursuing several leads and are asking for the public’s help in the case. If anyone saw someone operating a large forklift-type machine on Lachicotte Road in Lugoff between 1 and 3 a.m. on Tuesday, please notify the KCSO at (803) 425-1512 or call Crimestoppers at (800) 274-6372.
