Three members of the Lugoff-Elgin Water Authority (L-EWA) board of directors were re-elected last week during the authority’s annual public meeting at Lugoff Middle School.

Current board members Chuck Everett, Chip McCaa and Danny Tyner all won contested contests, with a crowd on hand “larger than the last 10 years combined,” as one board member put it.

Everett received 90 votes to Byron Branham’s 63, Tyner took 98 votes to Anna Stewart’s 43 and Shawn Wise’s 13 and McCaa took 86 to Sidney Butler’s 33 and Kip Wolfe’s 34.

To serve on the board, said L-EWA attorney Jay Bender, candidates must be an L-EWA user, live in the political boundaries of the district and be registered to vote.

Following the hour-long meeting, the board elected officers for the next year, none of which changed from the current year. Vince Halter was reelected chairman; Everett, vice chairman; and McCaa secretary/treasurer.

Auditor Marc Wood with Sheheen, Hancock and Godwin, LLP, spoke briefly about the authority’s finances, saying it “had a good year again, even though the economic climate is not very strong...Growth in this area has fallen off considerably.”

Total revenues for the authority were $4.4 million; total operating expenses were $3.2 million, which led to $1.2 million of operating income, Wood said. The bottom line for the year was a $118,000 profit compared to a loss of $138,000 last year, he added.

The audit hasn’t been completed, but L-EWA General Manager Mike Hancock said it will likely be available for the first meeting in October.

Halter talked about some of the highlights of the past year which include the launching of the authority’s website (www.cslewa.com), cooling fans for high service pumps, radio read meter technology, and new lines at Smyrna Road, the Turkey Ridge subdivision, Springvale Road, and Hwy. 34 from Trinity School Road to the Fairfield County line.

L-EWA board meetings, which are open to the public, are held the first Thursday of each month.
