A suspected armed robber is in the Kershaw County Detention Center after his arrest Sunday, only hours after he allegedly held up a cab driver in east Camden. A Camden Police Department (CPD) report said Tyrone Cook Jr., 18, of Elkwood Lane, Camden, was arrested around 4 p.m. at a fast-food restaurant on East DeKalb Street.

The report said the crime happened around 5 a.m. outside an east Camden convenience store when Cook got into the back seat of the cab and demanded money from the driver. The driver said she tried to drive away, but Cook pointed a gun at her, showed her the bullets and said he was not joking.

The driver to use her cell phone to call 911 and reported Cook grabbed the phone from her so she left the car, went inside the store and called 911. Store employees said Cook is a regular visitor to the store, had been there earlier and was recorded on the store’s security video. The cab driver said she had given a ride to Cook and another man the previous day and he stole her wallet at that time. She reported the theft to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.

CPD detectives took over the case and the report said the driver identified Cook in a photograph. Later in the day the CPD received a tip Cook was at another DeKalb Street convenience store and he was found nearby at the restaurant where he was arrested.
