There are certain victories which, at the end of the regular season, prove to be even more important than they seemed to be at the time they were played.

For the Lugoff-Elgin volleyball team, Thursday’s 3-1 win over visiting Irmo, in a key Region 4-AAA pairing, was such a match.

Heading into the contest, the Lady Demons were 2-2 in conference clashes. The 15-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-21 victory over the Lady Yellow Jackets kept Susan Morris’ charges in the first half of the six-team conference race.

“It was a huge win for us,” is how Morris summed up the match. “We are outsized by everyone we play in our region. You wonder where do they get these big girls? But, my kids fought and fought. We played smart and were more consistent in this match.”

L-E improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in league play following Thursday’s encounter.

L-E junior hitter/blocker Kayla Hughes had a big offensive night with 10 kills and four aces while senior outside hitter,
Christina Bell, added nine kills and a trio of aces. Senior setter Tyler Kirkland doled out 19 assists. Defensively, sophomore Megan Kirkland had 15 digs while senior Claire Noel added 10.

Morris said this is a match on which her team can build on. She hopes it will propel the Lady Demons to a win over a ranked Blythewood squad on the road on Tuesday.

“I think this is the beginning of some ‘fire’ for my team,” Morris said of the emotional win. “We can’t wait until  Blythewood on Tuesday.”
