An Elgin couple has been arrested on numerous charges after Elgin Police determined they falsely reported the theft of $12,000 worth of jewelry from their home and collected an insurance settlement for the case.

According to a press release from Elgin Police Chief Harold Brown, Leonard Talbert Johnson and Donna Marie Johnson have been charged with filing a false police report, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit a felony. They reportedly claimed the jewelry was stolen from their home in the Pine Forest community in July 2014. They also accused a police officer who had been at the home when the jewelry was allegedly taken for the theft.

The press release said the officer was at the home to assist first responders who had been dispatched to a possible drug overdose. The investigation included a polygraph test given to the accused officer and it was found the Johnsons had pawned the jewelry and had accepted money from the insurance company.

Both suspects were arrested and taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center, according to the release.
