Undefeated Irmo (7-0) made quick work of the Lugoff-Elgin girls tennis team with a 6-0 win in a Region 4-AAA match play Thursday evening.

L-E fell to 1-4 in region play.

“I have been imploring the girls to not hit the ball back to their opponent. It is okay to make the opponent run for the
ball,” said L-E head coach Zoe Dommel. “Irmo’s Sally Nguyen displayed that ability, running Alexie Herbert from one end of the court to the other. I don’t recall her hitting the ball back to Alexie once during the match.”

Ivey Westerkam got Irmo going, downing Lydia Royals at first singles, 6-1, 6-1. Nguyen then blanked Alexie Herbert in
both sets at second singles as did Jennifer Anderson in her third singles pairing with MeredithToole. Priya Purohit stopped Aaliyah Herbert , 6-1, 6-0, at number four while Isabelle Cooper topped Kelsey Worthington, 6-0, 6-0, to close singles action.

Irmo’s Kelsey Murrel and Emily Kay Turbeville handed L-E’s Ashley Martin and Beth Jordan two 6-1 losses in second doubles.

“We were definitely outclassed tonight. But we played hard and I hope that every match they are learning more about tennis,” Dommel said.
