Man shot by cousin during argument over vehicle

A Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputy responded to a call of an Elgin man shot in the leg by his cousin Sept. 6.

According to a KCSO report, the deputy arrived on Archer Avenue to find a 44-year-old man shot in the leg below the knee. The victim said his 39-year-old cousin, who lives in Columbia, tried to shoot another man in the chest during an argument about a vehicle the other man was repairing.

The victim said he got between the two men, tried to push the gun away and was shot in the leg. Emergency Management Services personnel treated the victim at the scene; he refused to be taken to the hospital.

The KCSO reported the following other recent incidents:

Someone burglarized a Gary Road, Camden home on Sept. 2. According to a KCSO report, a woman said she was away from the home for less than 45 minutes and found her 50-inch television in the yard when she returned. She reported several firearms had been removed. It appeared the burglars tried to use the victim’s utility wagon to haul the stolen items, but placed it back where it had been parked, according to the report. The value of the stolen guns totaled $4,300.

Someone stole a “zero-turn” lawnmower worth $8,000 from a Red Fox Road, Camden home on Sept. 3. According to a KCSO report, the victim said the machine had been in an unlocked barn on the property.

Someone stole a 2000 Lincoln Town Car on Sept. 7. According to KCSO report, an Elgin woman told a deputy she had seen the car at her Crooked Pine Lane home three days earlier.

The KCSO also reported 13 burglaries, nine arrests for driving under the influence, eight cases of driving under suspension, eight thefts, five assaults, four reports of vandalism, malicious injury to property, criminal domestic violence and possession of marijuana, three cases of public disorderly conduct, two reports of harassment and one incident each of trespassing, possession of drug paraphernalia, minor in possession of alcohol, breach of trust, possession of cocaine and driving without a license.


A homeless man told Camden Police Department (CPD) officers he was beaten and robbed Sept. 9.

According to a CPD report, the victim told police at the KershawHealth emergency room he has been camping in the woods off Springdale Drive. He said he was beaten unconsious by several subjects when he returned to his campsite that day. When he awoke, he said, his bicycle, sleeping bag, wallet and cellphone were all gone. The reporting officer said the man had a cut on his head, two black eyes and one eye was swollen shut.

The CPD also reported three assaults and one case each of theft, drug equipment violations, unlawful carrying of a handgun, harassment, drunkenness, fraud and criminal domestic violence.
