A Bethune man died Tuesday morning when the SUV he was driving went out of control, collided with a logging truck and burst into flames on U.S. 1 at James West Road near Cassatt.

Kershaw County Coroner David West said the accident occurred at 11:40 a.m. when Kenneth Lee Melton, 46, was westbound on U.S. 1. West said Melton apparently lost control of the vehicle, drove off the road, overcorrected, drove back onto the highway and spun around so the SUV was still traveling west, but backwards. It collided with the eastbound truck hard enough for the truck’s load of logs to shift and damage the truck cab, but the truck driver declined medical treatment, West said.

West said Melton was pronounced dead at the scene. Speed may have been a contributing factor and West said toxicology reports are pending on Melton.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, but had no report to share by press time Tuesday.
