Members of the KershawHealth Board of Trustees will formally sign its finalized agreement with Capella Healthcare today at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Med II waiting area of the main hospital campus at Roberts and Haile streets in Camden.

According to information released during recent board meetings, Capella is spending $35 million to lease most of KershawHealth’s real estate. The deal does not include the Karesh Long Term Care Center and former Burndale Shopping Center. The KershawHealth board will continue to govern the Karesh unit, with management assistance from Capella until such time as the board finds another partner or sells its long-term care center to another organization. It is unclear what will happen to the former shopping center on East DeKalb Street.

The $35 million deal also sees Capella purchasing the furniture, fixtures and equipment within the KershawHealth facilities it is leasing. It is collaborating with MUSC Health -- the patient care arm of the Medical University of South Carolina -- to operate the hospital as Kershaw Hospital LLC.

In addition to board members, members of KershawHealth senior management, including CEO Terry Gunn, are expected to be on hand for this morning’s signing.

A joint event with Capella and MUSC Health officials is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 7.
