One man was injured and another man arrested in an early Tuesday morning shooting on Chesnut Street in Camden.

Nakia Shelton Brunson, 19, of Kennedy Drive, Camden, was arrested at his home after a short chase. He is accused of shooting a 50-year-old man in the thigh during an altercation on the 800 block of Chesnut Street just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Brunson has been charged with first degree assault, which under new sentencing guidelines covers both assault and battery with intent to kill and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

The victim told officers with the Camden Police Department (CPD) that Brunson came to the Chesnut Street residence and began arguing with someone. The victim told Brunson to leave. Brunson continued to argue with the other person. The victim said he then escorted Brunson to the edge of the property where they began to argue. He said Brunson tried to strike him with a closed fist, but that he countered and landed a punch in Brunson’s face.

The victim said Brunson was dazed and fell backward a few feet. As the victim began to approach him, Brunson allegedly pulled a pistol from his pocket and pointed it at the victim. The victim said he began to “bob and weave in an attempt to create a moving target, thereby lessening the chance of him being hit.”

Brunson then allegedly fired one shot, striking the victim through the thigh.

The victim’s wife said she was asleep when she was awakened by the sound of gunfire. She got up, went outside and saw her husband talking to someone she didn’t know -- presumably Brunson. She said she heard her husband say that he’d been shot. She then asked the man if he’d shot her husband and said the man replied that he was sorry. At that point, the woman told the suspect she was going to call police; he reportedly said he was going home, at which point, the woman said, he put his gun in his pocket and walked away.

An officer spotted Brunson running on Kennedy Drive toward Pine Street and then through some houses toward Broad Street. Officers, with assistance from a Kershaw County deputy, set up a perimeter around Brunson’s home and found the pistol underneath a shed in the backyard.

Brunson’s mother was located inside the home and she allowed officers to enter and search for her son. Brunson, found in a rear bedroom, was handcuffed and taken to CPD headquarters to be questioned and then taken to jail.

In addition to first degree assault, Brunson may be facing gun charges, CPD Chief Joe Floyd said.

“He has a history of carrying a gun,” said Floyd. “He still has a gun charge pending from a November 2010 arrest and we are looking at a possible gun charge in this case.”

Brunson was still being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center as of Tuesday afternoon.

The victim was transported by EMS for treatment, according to the CPD report.
