SLADE FUNDERBURK returns a shot in last weekend’s Books on Broad 10 and under tennis tourney.

Camden’s Avery Younghans and James Brett Elliott won the girls’ and boys’ singles, respectively, at the Books on Broad 10 and Under Championships tennis tournament held at Camden Country Club last weekend.

Twenty-five youngsters from Camden, Columbia and Florence competed for titles in three divisions.

Camden’s Taylor Kingsley was a dual champion as she teamed with Camden’s Caroline Cassidy to win the girls’ double title before pairing with Elliott to win the co-ed mixed doubles title.

Camden’s Anne Margaret Hutto and Walter (Mac) Long were awarded the girls’ and boys’ sportsmanship awards, respectively.

The Columbia tandem of Nakul Smaran Ranjith and Sandeep Solomon won the boys’ doubles championship.

Books on Broad and Coffee created this event in partnership with Camden Country Club head tennis pro Kevin Jackson to give the youth tennis players of the community an opportunity to play in a tournament environment.

“Books on Broad and Coffee was delighted to sponsor this event to support the community and the amazing 10 and Under tennis program that Kevin Jackson is developing,” said co-owner Laurie Funderburk. “It was fantastic to see so many kids excited about tennis.”

Books on Broad and Coffee hosted a player smoothie party and book reading Friday evening prior to the tournament as an additional activity for players to enjoy.

“This was the first time in USTA history anyone has ever done that in conjunction with a tournament. It was fabulous,” said Jackson, who was the tournament director.

“The kids’ faces lit up when Coach Jackson read. It was a fun way to combine the importance of exercising your mind as well as your body,” added Funderburk.

Camden will host the USTA-sanctioned Kyle Cassidy AllState Junior Doubles Open tournament on Oct. 9.
