One organization is still deciding its future in the wake of Capella Healthcare and MUSC Health’s takeover of KershawHealth. The KershawHealth Foundation is trying to decide not only its future, but exactly how it will disburse approximately $2 million in donations it still holds.

“We were in kind of a holding pattern while waiting to see what would happen with the hospital,” Foundation Board Chair Kathy Comer said. “We’re performing due diligence to determine our course of action. It’s a fact-finding phase.”

Comer said whatever the foundation board decides, it will be in the best interest of Kershaw County residents.

“Our mission hasn’t changed, which is to advance healthcare for all the citizens of Kershaw County,” she said.

What has changed is the focus of its mission.

“Our mission was for the hospital, and it’s not the same hospital anymore,” Comer said; she also said the foundation would no longer conduct fundraising campaigns. “We’re not set up to do that anymore.”

In the meantime, the board is working to pick one or more entities to whom to disburse the $2 million.

“This is money which was given to us to put back into the county. We’re being very intentional and deliberate about it. There are a lot of worthy entities,” Comer said.

She also said the foundation’s own future hasn’t been decided.

“We’re trying to figure out whether we’ll dissolve or not,” she said.

Comer said she hopes the foundation’s future and exactly which organization or groups will benefit from the remaining $2 million in donations will become clear in the next 30 to 60 days.
