All Kershaw County residents and parents should be very proud of their schools. For two weeks in February, I was a member of a team who administered an assessment called the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) or the Nation’s Report Card, to 4th and 8th graders at four Kershaw County schools. The students were cooperative and polite and stayed on task the entire assessment period. They asked questions about the test and appeared committed to doing their best.

The teachers who monitored the assessments I conducted obviously had earned the respect of their students, and the displays in the rooms revealed their creative and all-inclusive approaches to teaching. We were greeted each assessment day by staff members who were courteous, organized, and professional. They provided a safe and attractive learning environment for the students.

As a retired Kershaw County teacher, I was impressed by the overall climate of the four schools I visited and proud to have been a part of the Kershaw County School System.
