John Caughman, Kershaw County’s director of voter registration and elections, will make a public presentation during tonight’s Kershaw County Council meeting on filling the District 1 seat vacated a week ago by Willie Mickle.

Mickle resigned Nov. 30 due to issues with insurance coverage as an elected “return to work” retiree. Mickle, elected in 2012, had one year left in his term. Caughman recently said he believed a special election would likely be held sometime during the spring.

Also, the identity of “Project Aurora” should be revealed tonight as council takes up third and final reading of a fee in lieu of taxes (FILOT) agreement with the still unnamed company. While the ordinance uses a figure of $45 million to describe the investment, the FILOT agreement states “Project Aurora” is committing $80 million over a 10-year period, with an initial $45 million investment “to purchase additional machinery and equipment and to renovate, upgrade and add increased square footage to the company’s existing facilities within the county and anticipating the creation of approximately 20 new full-time equivalent jobs.”

Other business on tonight’s agenda includes the possible appointments to fill two vacancies on the Health Services District of Kershaw County Board of Trustees and a look at council’s meeting schedule for 2016.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers at the Kershaw County Government Center, 515 Walnut St. in Camden, and is open to the public.
