Demons finish sixth in Wildcat Duals

After a 4-1 start on the first day of last week’s Knockout Sportswear Wildcat Duals, the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team came home from Lexington with a sixth-place finish.

The Demons fell in both their final two matches of the 14-team event. A 45-33 loss to Chapin put Ted Monroe’s troops into the fifth place match against the tournament host with the Wildcats topping L-E, 45-20.

The loss to Chapin was the second time this season in which the seventh-ranked AAA Eagles topped the Demons, who entered the tourney ranked sixth in 4A.

Trailing 6-0, L-e received pins from Nick Payne and Seth Ham at 195 and 220 pounds to grab the 12-6 advantage after three pairings. Chapin then won the next six matches to go on top 39-12.

The Demons received a win via decision from Jacob Power at 138 pounds followed by pins from Taylor Catoe and Evan McDonald pin at 145 and 152 pounds, respectively. The final victory came when Chapin forfeited to Jacob Carron at 160.

Against fourth-ranked Lexington, the host Wildcats won the first five matches to build a 22-0 lead before Power and Catoe scored major decision wins at 138 and 145 pounds. Ham and Alex Register won by forfeits at 195 and 220 pounds to close out the scoring for the Demons.

Ham finished the tournament with a 7-0 record while Catoe went 6-0 for L-E. Power and Carron both fashioned 6-1 marks while McDonald and Register won five of their seven matches in Lexington.

The Demons will return to the mat on Wednesday when they travel to third-ranked Dorman for a tri-match which also includes unranked Byrnes.
