L-E’S NOAH NORTH CELEBRATED his move to being ranked first among all 4A 145-pound wrestlers in the state by winning that weight class in last weekend’s Bearcat Invitational.

The Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team continues its habit of shining in individual tournament competition by finishing second behind tournament host Rock Hill in last weekend’s Bearcat Invitational.

Rock Hill, the two-time defending 4A state champion and ranked third in the Jan. 8 4A state poll, won the 26-team tourney title with 222.50 points. The Demons, which dropped a spot to seventh in that same poll, were second with 168.50 points. Fifth-ranked Fort Dorchester took third at Rock Hill with 153.50 points.

Ted Monroe’s charges had eight of its 14 wrestlers place in the event with Taylor Catoe and Noah North winning the 138- and 145-pound championships, respectively. North, a junior, was also selected by a vote of the coaches as the most outstanding wrestler in the lower (106 to 145 pound) weight divisions.

North (14-1) won his first match via forfeit before scoring a pin, major decision, technical fall and a decision victory the rest of the way. Catoe (27-4), a senior, won his first two matches by pin, won his semifinal pairing by decision before scoring a pin in the finals.

The Demons had a pair of third-place finishers in Jacob Powers (132 pounds) and Seth Ham (195), a fourth-place finish from Bryan Robinson (113), a sixth from Jacob Carron at 152 and a seventh from Evan McDonald at 160.

L-E returns to the mat Wednesday, hosting Chester and Cardinal Newman at 6 p.m. inside the Demons Den.
