Demon Dogs split four in Augusta

The Camden based Demon Dogs 14U travel baseball team traveled to Augusta’s Diamond Lakes Park on Sept. 18-19 and finished with a 2-2 record in the Reebok Fall Championship.

The Demon Dogs opened their weekend with an 8-0 shutout win over the Aiken Venom.

In the first inning, Christian Flick walked. Ross Hough reached on an error by the shortstop. After an out, Lawson Stokes singled, scoring Flick. A Carson Morgan single plated Hough while Stokes scored on a wild pitch.

In the third inning, Cole Irick led off with a single. Flick was hit by a pitch before Hough singled in Irick. Stokes then had a sacrifice fly, scoring Flick. Morgan’s single plated Hough. An inning later, Wesley Sheorn singled and stole second. Sam Powers singled and Tyler Jordan walked to load the bases. After a double play, Irick’s single brought Powers across.  In the fifth inning, Hough singled, stole second and scored when the catcher overthrew a pickoff attempt at second.

 Hough was the starting pitcher and threw three innings of no-hit ball. Will Abbott worked the final two frames and completed the no-hitter. The Venom only had three men reach base, all by walks.

The Demon Dogs closed Saturday play with a 6-4 win over the Georgia Express.

In the second inning, Abbott and Wesley Sheorn walked with Powers singling to load the bases. Jordan had a sacrifice, scoring Abbott. In the third, Irick singled and stole second. Hough singled with Irick taking third. Irick scored on a single by Darius Smith, with Hough scoring on an error on the play by the first baseman and Smith going to third. Lawson Stokes started on the mound and went three innings. Powers relieved and went the next three innings. The Express scored all of their runs in the second inning.

On Sunday morning, the Demon Dogs lost their 9 a.m. game to the Aiken Stampede, 9-0. The locals mustered just four hits and left seven men stranded on base. Hough started on the hill and went three innings with Powers pitching an inning. The Stampede scored 6 runs in the first inning and single runs in the second, third and fourth.

The Demon Dogs did not fare any better in Sunday’s 11 a.m. finale, losing to the Georgia Prospects, 4-0.

The Demon Dogs did hit better in this game, getting 10 hits, but they would leave a dozen runners on base with half of those on third.

Lawson Stokes was the starter on the mound and worked 3.1 innings with Hough relieving for the final 2.2 innings.
