Fad Almalik broke a 1-1 tie with a second half goal which proved to be the different in the match as the Camden Military Academy junior varsity soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 win over Ben Lippen School on Monday in Columbia.

The visiting Spartans played a solid first half with good ball possession and on-point combinations between midfielders and forwards. CMA sophomore Kile Rhodes picked up a ball past the midfield and blasted it into the back of the nets in the first half to open the scoring.

The Spartans had several scoring chances after that only to have the Falcons’ keeper come up big with several stops.

The hosts tied the game before the end of the first half after a miscommunication between the Spartans’ defense and their goalkeeper.

In the second half, Almalik, a sophomore, dribbled through the Falcon defense and scored the second and decisive goal for the Spartans.

CMA jayvee head coach Jair Ararat-Villegas, varsity head coach Mohsen Ferjani and Spartan captains Anthony Brown, Evan Jones and Jeffrey Nyman praised their players at the end of the game for their effort, determination and passion.
