KC wrestlers earn medals at SCYWA meet

Kershaw County wrestlers shined in the South Carolina Youth Wrestling Association’s (SCYWA) annual state wrestling tournament on Saturday, March 12 at Lexington High School.  

In the high school division, Jacob Power, a senior at L-E, defended his state title by defeating three opponents to win the 132 pound weight class. In addition, the club received third place finishes from L-E freshman Hunter Mathis at 120 pounds and Kahvon Brown, a sophomore at Camden High School, in the heavyweight division.

In the Middle School Division, wrestlers from the West Wateree region of the county came home with seven top-three finishes along with three champions.

 Randy Dinkins of Stover Middle School won at 115 pounds as did Lugoff-Elgin Middle School students Markeith Drakeford and Scotty Dean at 140 and 150 pounds, respectively.

In addition, Jordan Dinkins (Stover) was second at 110 pounds as was Drake Davis (L-EMS) in the heavyweight division. Rounding out the placers were Jacob Vincent (L-EMS) and J.W. Heron (L-EMS) who both placed third at 120 and 150 pounds, respectively.
