Former Kershaw County Chief Magistrate Judge Gene Hartis has formally filed and announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the District 2 seat on Kershaw County Council.

After two years of retirement, Hartis said he seeks to serve the citizens of his community as its councilman. He said he feels he knows the community’s needs as well as operations and functions of county council, which will enable him to be a benefit and effective member to the District 2 seat as well as the citizens of Kershaw County.

Should he win the nomination, Hartis would face the winner of the Democratic nomination. Incumbent Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr., a Democrat, stated during a recent county council meeting he does plan to seek reelection. To date, however, Hartis is the only known candidate to have officially filed for the seat.
