Full slate of youth sports camps on tap for this summer

With the school season rapidly coming to a close that means it is time for summer youth sports camps throughout Kershaw County.

Here is a list of the 2016 sports camps  being offered for young boys and girls:

 

Sports Fun Camp:  Boys and girls can learn basic fundamentals of baseball, soccer, basketball and football in this day camp. But, will also play fun games such as kickball, volleyball, frisbee golf, table tennis, and horseshoes. Skill development, competition, team work and fun are the main objectives. Coach April Garner will instruct the campers. Snacks are provided but campers must bring a bag Lunch. 

 

Dates: May 31 - June 3 

Location: Rec. Department Gym, 1042 W. DeKalb St. 

Ages: 6 - 12 years old 

Cost: $50;   $5 reduction for each additional child                                         

Hours: 9 a.m. - 3p.m.

Pre-registration: Required by May 25 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

Lugoff-Elgin Baseball Camp: This camp is held at Optimist Field at Lugoff-Elgin High School. Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Learn the fundamentals or improve your skills. Instructing the camp will be Randy Stokes, L-E High varsity coach with local college and high school players assisting. Campers are asked to bring their own equipment, proper shoes, hats and water bottles.

 

Dates: May 31 - June 2   

Location: Optimist Field 

Ages: 7 - 13 years old 

Cost: $45 ($5 reduction for each additional child)

Hours: 9a.m. – Noon 

Pre-registration: Required by May 25 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

CHS Cheerleading Camp: Instructing the camp will be the Camden High School varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders. They will offer both cheer and dance. Girls will be divided into two age groups: Ages 4 - 8 will learn cheer and Ages 9 - 12 will learn dance.  

 

Dates: June 1 -3 

Location: Camden High School gym  

Ages: 4 - 12 years old 

Cost: $45 (includes T-shirt) 

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon 

Pre-registration: Required by May 25 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

Camden High School Baseball Camp: Directed by Camden High head baseball coach Denny Beckley, the 2016 AAA state baseball coach of the year, along with members of his coaching staff and Bulldog players, campers will receive fundamental instruction in all phases of baseball. Each player will be drilled defensively on pitching, infield, and outfield play. Hitting will be stressed every day. There will also be instruction on bunting, base running, and sliding. The campers are to bring their own gloves, bats, and helmets, if possible. Also, be sure that they are dressed properly with sweat pants or baseball pants for there will be scrimmages with potential for sliding. There will be a break from 11 a.m. until 11:20 a.m. at which time where campers may bring money to buy snacks from the concession stand or bring their own food and drink. T-shirts will be given to each camper as well.

 

Dates: May 30 - June 3      Monday through Friday 

Location: Camden High School Baseball Field, Ehrenclou Drive 

Ages: 6 - 13 years old 

Cost: $60 ($10 reduction for 2 or more children -- includes T-shirt)

Hours: 9a.m. – noon

North Central Softball Camp: This softball camp is held at the North Central softball field. Beginner through advanced players are welcome. Daily sessions will include defensive play, base running and hitting. Instructing the camp will be North Central head softball coach Mike Grigsby. 

 

Dates: May 31, June 1-2      

Location: North Central High School softball field 

Ages: 6 years old to rising 9th grader 

Cost: $40 per camper 

Hours:  8:30 A.M. - 11:30 A.M.

Lugoff-Elgin Softball Camp: This softball camp is held at the Lugoff-Elgin High School softball fields. Beginner through advanced players are welcome. Daily sessions will include defensive play, base running and hitting. Instructing the camp will be Lugoff-Elgin High head softball coach James Marlow with local players assisting. 

 

Dates: June 6 - 9      

Location: Lugoff Elgin High School softball field, use Richardson Road entrance 

Ages: 6 years old to rising 9th grader 

Cost: $50 per camper (includes T-shirt)

Hours:  8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

“Beyond the Court” Basketball Camp: This camp is offered for boys and girls ages 6 - 17. The camp will teach the fundamentals of basketball and the aspects of life “Beyond the Court.”  Emphasis will be placed on physical skills and techniques, proper training and conditioning, team sport, positive mental attitudes, healthy lifestyles and good sportsmanship as well as many other aspects.  The camp is instructed by Camden High varsity boys assistant coach Sterling Council along with other standout basketball players. 

 

Dates: June 6 - 8 

Location: Camden High School gym 

Ages: 6 - 17 years old 

Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  

Cost: $60 per camper (includes T-shirt, lunch and sports bag)

Technical Soccer Camp: Technical Soccer Camp offers a fun & nurturing environment that is conducive to learning.  The curriculum will cover technical development, technical functional training, scrimmages, and includes our 1001 touches program. ‘A’-licensed Director of Coaching for Liverpool FCA, Alan Riches selects his staff based on many factors such as their enthusiasm, soccer knowledge and capabilities and the ability to establish relationships. Each camper is treated as an individual with unique needs. The purpose of the recreational camp is to have fun while developing soccer awareness and skills for long-term growth. It’s a game to enjoy, so we use laughter as just one measuring tool. The more serious player will undergo training that will encourage decision making within a competitive environment in order to maximize potential. 

 

Dates: June 6 - 10   

Location: Kershaw County West Complex, 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages: 6 - 18 years old 

Cost: $65 (includes T-shirt) 

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

Lugoff-Elgin Volleyball Camp: Come to learn or improve your skills. Players will be grouped by skill level. Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Instructing the camp will be second-year Lugoff Elgin varsity head coach Katie Ham. 

 

Dates: June 6 - 10 

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School gym 

Ages: 9 - 14 (beginner - advanced) 

Cost: $60.00 (includes T-shirt) $5 reduction for each additional child 

Hours: 9:00 a.m. – Noon

Lugoff-Elgin Basketball Camp: The primary focus of this camp will be to teach young players basic basketball skills and fundamentals. Participants will also learn the concept of team play.  There will be some scrimmage games and awards for free throw shooting, hustling, sportsmanship and more.  There will be eight-foot goals for younger players. The camp is instructed by Lugoff-Elgin varsity head coaches Von Duncan and Garrett Knight, along with varsity players assisting.

 

Dates:  June 13 - 16  

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School gym

Ages:   5 - 14 years old

Hours:  9 a.m. - Noon

Cost:  $60 per camper (includes T-shirt)

North Central Baseball Camp: Beginners through advanced players are welcome to this two-day camp directed by North Central head baseball coach Robbie Cash who will be assisted by members of his coaching staff and Knight players. Ages: 7 - 13 years old

Demon Football Camp: Directed by Lugoff-Elgin head football coach Matt Campbell, a former USC standout who played eight seasons in the NFL, and members of the Demons’ coaching staff, this three-night, non-contact camp is designed to concentrate on developing fundamental skills in all areas of the game including offensive, defensive and specialty techniques. Phases of the kicking game, passing game, skill position and line play will also be included in the instructional program. Campers will also learn about sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship in a championship environment. Shorts, T-shirt and cleats are the only needed equipment.

 

Dates: June 13-15 

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High school 

Cost: $50 per child (includes T-shirt)

Ages: Grade 3-8 

Hours: 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The 20th and final Vision Basketball Camp featuring Lawrence Thomas: This will be the final go ‘round of the popular camp which is directed by former Camden High and Jacksonville University basketball standout Harvin Council, who will use the free time from his busy schedule to relax. Vision Basketball Camp is designed for boys and girls basketball players of all skill levels. This year, Lawrence Thomas, who is affiliated with Pro Skills Basketball in Charlotte, will be featured. Thomas, a USA-licensed coach has trained several players who have gone to receive full scholarships to play basketball in college. Also assisting Council throughout the week will be college and high school basketball players from in and around the region. Stations will be set up to work on individual skills while free throw shooting contests, three-on-three games, five-on-five games and skills competitions will also be part of the curriculum at this annual camp. Awards will be presented to winners of the hot shot, free throw and defensive competitions.

Camden High Softball Camp: Learn fundamental skills of fast pitch softball or improve your skills in the camp. Daily sessions will include defensive play, base running and hitting. Instructing the camp will be Camden High varsity softball coach Lynn Looney along with varsity and jayvee players assisting. 

 

Dates: June 13-17 

Location: CHS Softball Field behind Camden High School 

Ages: 7 - 13 years old 

Cost: $60

Hours: 9 A.M. - Noon

Vonnie Holliday/ Little Bulldog Football Camp: The camp is sponsored by Vonnie Holliday, a former Camden High School standout, as well as a 14-year NFL standout. Campers will learn the fundamentals of football and improve your skills in this camp. Daily training sessions will include all aspects of defense and offense. No football equipment needed. Campers are asked to wear cleats and bring a water bottle. 

 

Dates: June 20-23 

Location: Camden High School Gym 

Cost: $35 per child (includes T-shirt)

Ages: 7 - 14 years old 

Hours: 9a.m. - noon 

Pre-registration: Required by  June 15 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

Golf Camp: Learn the fundamentals of golf or improve your skills in this camp which will have two sessions. Matt McCarley, PGA professional at the Camden Country Club will direct the camp.  Beginners through advance golfers are welcome. 

 

Dates: June 20 - 23 and July 18 - 21 

Location: Camden Country Club, Knights Hill Road, Camden

Ages: 7 - 17 years old 

Hours:  8 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 

Cost: $85 

Pre-registration: Required by June 15 or, July 13 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

Camden High Volleyball Camp: This camp is for beginners through intermediate players. Beginners will focus on skill development and work toward game play. Intermediate players will refine their skills and work on more advanced team concepts. Players will be grouped by skill level. Instructing the camp will be Paige Wilson, Camden High varsity head coach along with her coaching staff and high school players. 

 

Dates: June 27 - July 1 

Location: Camden High School Gym 

Ages: 8 & up 

Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt) $5 reduction for each additional child

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

Pre-registration: Required by June 22 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009 

 

North Central Football Camp: Directed by North Central head football coach Louis Clyburn and members of the Knights’ coaching staff, this two-day, non-contact camp is designed to concentrate on developing fundamental skills in all areas of the game including offensive, defensive and specialty techniques. Shorts, T-shirt and cleats are the only needed equipment.

 

Dates: July 18-19 

Location: North Central High School 

Cost: $30 per child 

Ages: 7-14 years old 

Hours: 9 a.m. – Noon

Camden High School Wrestling Camp: This camp offers instruction in the three major styles of wrestling: Greco Roman, Freestyle, and Folkstyle. The camp intends to develop athletes in core fundamentals of each style no matter the skill level, from beginner to state qualifier. The camp’s goal is to improve in all aspects of wrestling while establishing confidence, respect, and promoting high moral standards to all participants. Camden High varsity wrestling coach Joey Hendrix and his coaching staff will instruct the camp.  

 

Dates: June 27 - 30 

Location: TBA 

Ages: Rising 3rd Grade to 12 Grade (ages 8 & up) 

Cost: $60 per camper ($5 reduction for each additional child) (includes T-shirt) 

Hours: 9:00 am - Noon 

Pre-registration: Required by June 22 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

Horse Riding Camp or Lessons: Summer horse camp sessions or lessons are available through the Parks & Recreation Department. Linda Klein is the instructor.  Participants will become acquainted with the horse through grooming, tacking, and leading in the first level, working their way steadily towards jumping, horse show etiquette, conformation and rules of the show ring in higher levels. 

 

Dates: (Beginners) June 6 - July 1 (each week); (Advanced) June 13 -17; July 11 - 29 (each week): These dates you may attend your choice of half day camp at $150 a week or all day camp, (by appointment) at $275 a week. Lessons are available which meet one day a week for four weeks at $120 per person (by appointment)          

Hours: 8:30 a.m. – Noon 

Location: Voxton Farm Camden 

Cost: $150.00                                                                               

Ages: 6 - 18 years old 

Registration: One week in advance through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009

 

Soccer Camp: This camp is open to boys and girls. Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability. Daily training sessions will include individual ball handling skills, partner skills, developmental games and much more. This fun-filled week is the perfect way to introduce players to the game of soccer and to challenge advanced players to improve their game. Players must wear shin guards and bring a water bottle and soccer ball. The instructor is Blythewood High boys’ soccer coach Peter Wittig, who has 20-plus years experience coaching at the college, high school, and youth level. 

Dates: August 1 - 5

Ages: 6 - 14 years old

Cost: $65 (includes T-shirt)
