The Lee County Observer -- a Camden Media Co. newspaper -- and Bishopville radio station WAGS and the Lee County Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to sponsor a debate for the six candidates running for the S.C. House of Representatives District 50 seat. District 50 is comprised of all of Lee County, and parts of Kershaw and Sumter counties.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend the forum being held Thursday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ashwood gym.

Tom Drayton, Will Wheeler, Demoine Kinney and Keith Johnson, all of Lee County; and Brian Alston and Crystal Cunningham, both from Sumter County, are vying for the seat held by Rep. Brown since 1984. Brown announced in March he would not seek re-election.

The June 2 debate will feature six questions to be provided to the candidates ahead of time. Each candidate will reach into a box and pick one question then be given three minutes for a response.

The other candidates will then be allowed time to question or challenge that response.

While there will be no questions allowed from the audience the night of the debate, if you have an issue you think should be addressed by the candidates, please email Lee County Observer Editor Gee Atkinson at for consideration today, which is the deadline to do so.
