The Kershaw County Dixie Darlings All-Star softball team --- girls eight years old and under --- finished second in the South Carolina State championship Tournament played in Hartsville last week. The local entry opened play with a 12-0 win over Walhalla in their first game before downing Sumter the next day, 19-11.

In their third game, which started near midnight following a three-hour rain delay, they fell to Aynor, 11-0. The girls staved off elimination with a 7-6 win over Sumter in the fourth day of the tourney which left three teams --- KC, Pelion and Aynor --- with one loss each. Pelion received the bye to the championship game while KC fell to Aynor. Pelion won the state title and will represent the Palmetto State at the World Series in Mississippi.

Since both KC and Aynor had two losses and played the same number of games, both teams were named as co-runners-up.
