After having had last Friday night off, the Camden and Lugoff-Elgin football teams will open playoff action on Friday night.

Delayed two weeks so that high school football teams could get in all the games which were postponed due to Hurricane Matthew last month, the South Caroline High School League moved the start of the playoffs to Friday, Nov. 18. They were originally slated to begin on Nov. 4.

Moving the start of the playoffs means that state championship weekend in the Palmetto State will be Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17.

Here is how the playoff picture shapes up for Camden and Lugoff-Elgin:

Camden: The Bulldogs (5-5) finished third in Region 4-AAA with a 2-2 record and will travel to meet Chapman, the runner-up finisher out of Region 3, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Inman in a AAA Upper State playoff contest.

The host Panthers (7-3) were awarded second place in the circuit behind Newberry after having tied Clinton and Woodruff with 3-2 records in the six-team circuit.

Friday marks the Bulldogs’ first state playoff appearance since an opening round loss at Belton-Honea Path in 2014.

The winner of this game will meet the winner of the Berea at Seneca pairing. Should Berea and Camden both win on Friday, Camden would host next Friday’s second round game. Should Seneca, a one-seed win, it will host the second round encounter.

Lugoff-Elgin: The Demons (5-5) finished second in Region 6-4A  with a 3-1 record and will host Beaufort, the third-place finisher out of Region 8, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Lugoff-Elgin Stadium in a 4A Lower State playoff contest.

The visiting Eagles (7-3) finished third behind Region 8 champion Berkeley and runner-up Cane Bay in Region 8 with a 3-2 league record.

Friday marks the Demons’ first state playoff appearance since an opening round loss to visiting Ashley Ridge in 2010.

The winner of this game will meet the winner of the Wilson at Chapin pairing. Should Wilson and L-E both win on Friday, L-E would host next Friday’s second round game. Should Chapin, a one-seed win, it will host the second round encounter.

More detailed information on both playoff games will be included in Friday’s edition of The Chronicle-Independent.
