When you have a roster of eight players and one not dressed out, it could cause for some anxious moments for a basketball team.

Rather than panic, the Lugoff-Elgin girls played on and opened the season with a 43-33 win over C.A. Johnson on Tuesday night in Columbia.

L-E head coach Von Duncan praised her team which “played relentless and with a lot of heart” in kicking off the season in style.

Lady Demon senior Alyssa Weems paced all scorers with 12 points. That, Duncan said, only told part of the story.

“She led the team with tough on the ball defensive pressure causing several turnovers that we were able to capitalize on” Duncan said of Weems. “It was nice to see her step it up and be very agitating to their offense by being in their face and vocal.”

Sophomore Aiyana Gaines, who had seven points, did a good job in directing the L-E offensive attack. “(Gaines) did a good job of taking care of the ball and controlling tempo on offense,” Duncan said of her point guard. “Ya has worked hard on her court vision, which showed by her finding and hitting the open man. She played selfless and patiently allowed the offense to flow.”

Caitlyn Simon also added seven points for the winners who received six from Jasmine Sexton, five from Rachel Larsen, four from Ivey Allen and two points from Jayla Sullivan.

“Our girls had an all around good game,” Duncan said of her team’s effort. “This is the first game in several seasons that everybody scored. After scoring, we did a better job getting stops, which is something we have been harping on. It’s good to score, but we have to get stops. We also did better boxing out and rebounding.

“Our goal is to control as many possessions as possible and last night, they did that. They vibed better on the court and it was a beautiful thing to watch unfold.”

One night later, L-E was tripped up by River Bluff, 48-26.

Gaines led the Lady Demons with 11 points while Weems and Sullivan added seven and six points, respectively.

Demons falls to Hornets, Gators: In the nightcap, C.A. Johnson spoiled L-E’s season opener by downing the visiting Demons, 49-35.

Junior forward Bradwin Salmond led the way for L-E with 14 points while senior Elliott Campbell and Jose McMichael added 10 and five points, respectively.

On Wednesday, L-E came out on the short end of a 57-51 decision at River Bluff.

Salmond led the Demons with 21 points while Kevon Roberson and Campbell added 11 and nine, respectively.

Tonight’s games: Lugoff-Elgin kicks off its home slate when North Central comes to the Demons Den for a doubleheader starting with the girls’ game at 6 p.m.

Camden has tonight off and will not be in action until traveling to meet L-E next Friday night.
