On Dec. 14, the Bakers provided Jack Hair with a check for $5,000. From left to right, Patty Baker, Dave Baker, Jack Hair and Kay Buhrow.

A news story about Jack Hair’s need for $15,000 glasses caught the attention of a local man, and he provided Hair the remainder of the cost, $5,000.

David Baker has lived in Camden for over twenty years and owned Image Printing. He and his wife read the article on Hair the weekend the story came out and they were intrigued.

“Anyone trying to help our youth today is a Godsend,” Baker said.

Hair was diagnosed with juvenile retinoschisis when he was in kindergarten. His eyesight has deteriorated overtime, and he can only see figures. The chunky glasses (they resemble the new virtual reality glasses out now) will allow him to see more than just figures, but the details on individuals’ faces.

The weekend the story came out, Baker Christmas shopped, and he could not get it out of his head how wonderful it would be for Jack to be able to see his wife and children for the time.

“I honestly thought about how neat it was that he could see his family for the first time,” Baker said.

The Hairs honestly want to thank more than just Baker; they want to thank the readers of the paper.

Hair received the glasses on Monday, Dec. 19 and he is thankful.

“I would like to thank everyone for their prayers and donations, it’s overwhelming to see and feel the outpouring of love from our community,” Hair said. “It’s so humbling to see the Christmas spirit still alive and well.”

A family friend reiterated the same message.

“The readers of the Chronicle-Independent are amazing,” family friend Sherri Williams said. “As soon as the story came out in the paper, donations came in. We’re thankful for it.”

Baker and his wife Patty met with Hair on December 14 to provide him the money needed for the glasses.  They brought along Patty’s sister Kay Buhrow. Buhrow has known Jack for quite some time because of her ties to the youth group.

When two strangers meet… they hit it off quite well. Baker and Hair had never met, only phone conversations, but when they started talking with each other, you would have thought they had known each other for years. Baker’s wife remembers Buhrow talking about Hair’s work with the youth, but never thought she would meet him.

Not only did the Bakers provide the $5,000, but David Baker provided Hair with a watch in order for Hair to remember him by. Baker won the watch at a golf tournament, and he felt Hair would utilize it more than he would.

Now that Hair has the glasses, he will be starting training programs with the glasses via Skype.
