NORTH CENTRAL STUDENT-ATHLETES have taken part in a leadership initiative sponsored by Upchurch and Jowers Insurance Agency. The school’s fall sports leadership winners were, from left, Daniel Martinez, Deja Linton, Jacob Mathis, Chris Sims, Logan Coates and Chance Mangum.

Last spring, the North Central High School athletic department began a new initiative designed at going the extra mile to promote  leadership throughout the Knights’ and Lady Knights’ athletic teams.

School athletic coaches and officials have taken several groups both last year and this year to different leadership workshops and forums. The exposure and education gained at such events teach these students to return to the school and cultivate a culture changing mentality.

The school’s athletic department has teamed with Upchurch and Jowers Insurance Agency of Camden to help sponsor these trips and workshops.

NCHS athletic director Louis Clyburn said the experience has proven to be invaluable for both students and coaches at the school.

“Victor Jowers has shown that education and leadership in this county is and will be important and through his generosity, the students at North Central High School are able benefit from getting exposed to great experiences,” Clyburn said. “As the athletic director at North Central, I would like to give a huge Thank You to Upchurch and Jowers and many other Camden businesses that support our local schools in so many ways.  Without this support we would not be able to expose these kids to so many different things that will help them down the road.”

Clyburn then said NCHS officials took the program one step further.

“To enhance this ‘Leadership Program’ in the school,” he said, “we also added semester awards to students in various sports that have exhibited the qualities or hard work and leadership both on and off the playing field.
